Flexible lamellar

This is a DIC photo of the lamellar phase, formed by mixing nematic fd virus with 100 nm PS spheres. The air/nematic miniscus is seen along the bottom of the image. The virus alignes parallel to the air interface. This boundary condition causes the lamaller to bend. In contrast, a pure fd smectic would break into a twist grain boundary like defect structure.
